Low Back Pain
Low back pain is a pain in your back that can happen anywhere below the ribs and above the legs. Low back pain is widespread among adults. Almost everyone has low back pain at one time or another.
Causes of Low Back Pain
The most common causes of low back pain are:
- Injury or overuse including fracture, sprains, or strains of soft tissues such as ligaments and muscles or injuries to the small joints between the bones of the spine.
- Pressure on nerve roots from conditions such as a herniated disc or spinal stenosis.
- Osteoarthritis of the small joints of the spine (facet joints).
- Aging causing degenerative disc disease.
Less common causes of low back pain include tumors, spinal infection, and ankylosing spondylitis. Sometimes low back pain is referred from the abdominal pelvic area like aneurysms, and sometimes it's not clear what causes low back pain.
Diagnosing Low Back Pain
Low back pain diagnosis is made by reviewing your medical history, a physical exam, and possibly tests like X-ray, MRI, CT Scan, and diagnostic injections.
